World Famous Hodad’s — Ocean Beach, CA

This San Diego beach town is home to the iconic Hodad’s… offering amazing burgers and craft brews from their own local brewery. “World’s Best Burgers!” is the legendary tagline… upheld by their “Enormous Fan Nation”.

Hodad’s has 50 years of history here in “Flavortown”… a term coined by Celebrity Chef Guy Fieri (pictured with current owner and grandson of the original owners). These incredible burgers were first served up at a stand on the beach in 1969. Hodad’s has since catapulted to stardom… changing from a local burger joint to a world famous destination with lines out the door.

Guy Fieri was instrumental in Hodad’s rise to fame with his “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives” episode filmed here in 2007. Guy is a regular visitor… and they’ve even created a burger inspired by him — the Guido Burger. It’s a pastrami-smothered burger with ketchup, pickles, Swiss cheese, grilled onions, and spicy brown mustard.

The restaurant vibe is beachy, kitschy and fun-loving. Collector license plates, signs and stickers line the walls… and surfboards hang from the ceiling. Hodad’s secret to success — “It’s all about fresh toppings, great portions and good times!”

The name “Hodad’s” originated in surfing terminology as “a non-surfer who spends time at beaches masquerading as a surfer”. It’s all in jest… as surfers and hodads alike are welcome here.

Menu offerings feature an array of burger choices… singles, doubles and specialties… and frings… baskets of wedge cut fries and crispy onion rings. Milkshakes with triple scoops of ice cream are favorites… together with craft beers from Hodad’s Brewing Company.

All burgers are hand-crafted, fresh, never frozen…  topped with mayo, mustard, onion, ketchup, pickle, tomato, lettuce… and optional cheese. Hodad’s calls them “old-fashioned, sloppy, run down your arms burgers”. Their double burger is definitely a meal at just under one pound of meat. One of their specialties is the Double Bacon Cheeseburger where the bacon is grilled into a patty the size of the burger itself.

On your next visit to San Diego, stop in to Guy Fieri’s favorite seaside burger spot. See if you agree… Hodad’s has the World’s Best Burgers!
